Director's Letter

Dear Members

I hope that when you read our Fall 2007 programming section you are as pleased as I am to see all the new course offerings.  Our schedule has more classes this fall for parents, babies, toddlers, school age children, adolescents and adults than ever before. Many thanks to the Programming Committee and especially to Cynthia Cubides and Trish Class for their creativity and hard work.

One of the reasons we are able to offer so many programs is our longstanding, cooperative, and friendly relationship with the Port Washington Children's Center, our neighbor at Landmark on Main Street. The newest benefit of our relationship is the agreement to rent one of PWCC's after-school program classrooms during the morning hours of each school day.  This accomplishment took the effort and good will of staff and Board members from both organizations, and I hope it will be just the beginning of great things to come.

A recurring theme is the nature of the PRC as a member cooperative.  As our programming expands and our events grow in size and number, we really need every member to commit at least 5 hours a year of their time to the PRC.  We serve almost 400 member families annually with a tiny staff.  The only way to keep our costs low is to depend on our members for their participation

You may notice that I did not use the word "volunteer."  The word implies that you are free to participate or not as you desire.  It is not the case with the PRC.  If you cannot participate, or do not wish to, you may opt to pay the $75 annual fee in-lieu of participation.  This fee represents the approximate cost of 5 hours of staff time.  However, we would much prefer that you participate.  It's good for the PRC because it brings new energy and ideas to our organization; and it's good for you because it allows you to use your talents and skills in a way that doesn't disrupt your time with your young family. There are opportunities to participate at home, on the telephone, at events and in classes.

On this fall's registration form, you will be asked to indicate, in order or preference, 3 areas in which you would like to work.  You will be contacted by a committee chair to schedule a time and activity for your participation. Also, look for periodic emails to our membership highlighting opportunities for participation.  Please give generously of your time. The PRC depends on you.

Thanks,
Sandy Ehrlich
